Who am I?

Hi, I’m Martin Smith, and welcome to my website. The earnest young chappy above is me. The photo was taken at a pivotal moment in my life: the last day I took anything seriously. Having spent a working life crunching numbers, I retired in 2015 to the Bellarine Peninsula, where I live and write and wage the eternal war against commas. When I’m not banging away on my keyboard with thumbs, index fingers or forehead, or reading snippets of my scribblings to my beloved Rose, you’ll more likely than not find me walking the beach barefoot at low tide or downing a double scoop of Rocky Road at the local ice-creamery.

What do I published?

I am an Australian writer—a humourist of sorts—of short fiction. Since January 2026, I have published a story of humour—a comedy—on this site on every Sunday. (Some of the longer stories have been spread over two or more weeks.)

Where am I published?

For those of you who prefer to flick through the printed page rather than scroll down a screen, I am publishing a number of books in the next twelve months.

My first three collections of comedies (and a volume of collected comedies) will be published in December, 2026. I will then be publishing three more collections of comedies (and a second volume of collected comedies) in mid 2027.

Many of my stories have been published online at Geelong Cereal. Geelong Cereal is a free online magazine that showcases local writing and creative arts with an emphasis on serial fiction. Creative work by and about people from the Geelong region is highly sought after, but work from further afield is also enthusiastically welcomed.

I have also had some of my stories read on-air at 94.7 The Pulse.
